Manhattan Walk-up Buildings
There may be no more self-explanatory term in New York real estate than walk-up apartment. While the name does kind of takes the guesswork out of how one reaches the apartment in question, there’s more to Manhattan walk-ups than their lack of elevators (and the exercise that comes with it).
Manhattan walk-ups are low-rise apartment buildings, generally topping out around six floors, no more or less. With the exception of some elegant pre-war walk-ups in Chelsea, Greenwich Village and Gramercy, walk-ups are not among Manhattan’s most upscale listings. But given that apartments in Manhattan walk-ups are often as spacious and gracious as those in taller, elevator-equipped buildings, walk-ups can often be a great value, and the communities they foster can be especially welcoming.
