Occupying the southern portion of Midtown West, Clinton is an emerging and energetic residential neighborhood. Roughly demarcated by 34th Street, 8th Avenue, 50th Street, and the Hudson River, the area is seeing a construction boom unprecedented in New York City. Perhaps the best description of Clinton is a “grittier Chelsea.” Both have a wide range of buildings, ranging from brick tenements to manufacturing lofts to contemporary glass high-rises, while actively working to maintain an artistic atmosphere. The area now known as Clinton was once known as Hell’s Kitchen, and that term is still in periodic use today.
Originally a quiet community with farmland and gardens, Clinton experienced explosive growth due to the construction of the Hudson Railroad, which brought manufacturing and laborers to the area. Irish immigrants began to inhabit the streets near the river and worked in the many factories that dotted the waterfront. Subsequent waves of immigrants moved to the area, and at one point conflict was so constant that residents began to flee as fast as possible. With the re-zoning of the neighborhood and the search for low rent a big concern, urban professionals began to settle in Clinton, and today it is an incredibly diverse population. As the Chelsea of the north in many ways, Clinton is continually appealing to those seeking the bohemian edge that has now started to disappear from Chelsea and other areas downtown. Affordable for Midtown, it has access to many of Manhattan’s important cultural and recreational destinations as well as subway access on Eighth Avenue. Continued development will allow more people to make Clinton their home, and soon it will become as renowned as many of Manhattan’s other artistic neighborhoods, if it hasn’t gotten there already.
