A subsection of Midtown Manhattan, the Garment District’s worldwide influence on fashion cannot be overstated. Stretching from 34th to 42nd Streets between Fifth and Ninth Avenues, it was at one time the most fashion-oriented locale in the country. While no longer the epicenter it once was, the Garment District still contains a number of high-profile showrooms and fashion label headquarters. The Garment District blends in with the rest of Midtown, but its historic significance makes it an important part of New York City. Since the 19th century, New York City has been one of the hubs of the fashion industry, and the Garment District served as its center. The neighborhood’s central location allowed for the easy transportation of goods across the country and was equidistant from most settled areas of the city. With the decline of American textile manufacturing beginning in the mid-20th century, the Garment District began to decline, although its location and cheaper rents than the rest of Midtown Manhattan have made it more attractive to smaller businesses.
Although a part of Midtown and in many ways indistinguishable from it, the Garment District does have remnants left over from its days as a fashion mecca. Much of the area was built out before the skyscraper, and as such its buildings are smaller and designed in a style more reflective of Lower Manhattan. It is still mostly commercial, so the area does begin to empty out at night, but for those who prefer a central location, living in the Garment District is a worthwhile choice. As more formerly manufacturing buildings are converted to residential and office space, the neighborhood will continue to grow.
Still, there are luxury rental apartments available in this high-energy 'hood, most of them in converted warehouses and some in new construction luxury apartment buildings. A central Manhattan location, prime mass transit access, iconic shopping and an ongoing office-space boom have ensured that the Garment District has retained an enduring appeal, and its fortunes as a residential neighborhood are on the rise. Glenwood Management's new Emerald Green, for instance, offers luxurious, LEED-certified rental apartments from a peerlessly central location.
