Inwood

Inwood stretches from 220th street to the North to Dykman Street towards the south, and is the northernmost neighborhood in the island of Manhattan. It is flanked on both its east and west sides by the Harlem River and Hudson River, respectively, providing for breathtaking views from many of its apartments. Inwood finds itself ensconced in the history of New York City; aside from its famous Inwood Marble quarries which produced a great amount of the stone used to build government buildings in New York in the early 20th century, it is also the site where the Dutch bought the Island of Manhattan from the Native American Lenape tribe. Filled with beautiful art-deco apartment buildings, Inwood also boasts a suburban, almost isolated feel while still retaining easy access to a myriad of public transportation options.

Originally a Jewish and Irish neighborhood, Inwood has transitioned into a vibrant, predominantly Dominican community. Though the people have changed, the landmarks have not; home to the only natural forest left in Manhattan (Inwood Hill Park), the neighborhood finds itself surrounded by a variety of parks and artistic brilliance. Whether it’s Isham Park, which often hosts a variety of free concerts, to the Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art famous for its Medieval European artwork, Inwood is the type of place with something for everyone. Dykman House, the oldest farmhouse in NYC, also sits within its borders, as well as the Seaman-Drake Arch, which is made entirely of the aforementioned Inwood Marble and one of only two free-standing arches left in Manhattan. Also the birthplace of Hall of Fame basketball star Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan is not simply a place to call home; it is a source of pride for all of its residents, and an integral part of New York’s history.
