NoHo

The northern and slightly less known counterpart to SoHo, NoHo comprises the area of Lower Manhattan bounded by Houston Street to the south, Broadway to the west, Astor Place to the north, and Bowery to the east. A transition zone, it incorporates SoHo’s renowned cast iron lofts, Greenwich Village’s brick structures, and the East Village’s tenement-style buildings. This diversity of architecture is mirrored in its population; wealthy urban professionals live side-by-side with students at New York University and Cooper Union as well as new transplants to the ever-chaing East Village. Despite being one of New York City’s smallest neighborhoods, there is high demand for its historic housing stock, much of which is preserved as part of the NoHo Historic District.

The term “NoHo” is relatively recent, having been coined in the same manner as its larger sister neighborhood, SoHo. The area was formed from parts of Greenwich Village and the East Village, and their influences are still seen today. Its proximity to NYU makes it attractive to students who have incorporated the bohemian atmosphere of Greenwich Village, while the grittier and immigrant-based history derives from the population of the East Village spilling over to the west of Bowery. NoHo’s small streets and diverse mix of buildings and people have created a close-knit and unique community, attracting potential buyers from across New York City.

Not as crowded as its surrounding neighborhoods, but still active nonetheless, NoHo strikes a balance rare in Manhattan. It is active yet not overly busy, varied but not too eclectic, and modern without forgetting its past, and that is why so many people want to live in this small slice of Manhattan.
