Sutton Place

Elegant, ornate, and expensive. In many ways, those three words describe the tiny enclave of Sutton Place, an upscale neighborhood that has grown around the street of the same name. Although part of Midtown Manhattan, Sutton Place feels at times disconnected from the rest of New York City. Its wealth of brick apartment buildings with exquisite detailing house some of the city’s famous residents, while the Midtown skyline seems distant to the west. As a result, Sutton Place is both exclusive and desirable. A partially planned community, Sutton Place was born in 1875 after the construction of a number of townhouses by the neighborhood’s namesake, Effingham Sutton. The area’s views of the East River made it particularly popular with the elite of New York City in the 1920s.

Sutton Place has remained as exclusive as ever, and some of its buildings are renowned throughout New York for their grand architecture and luxurious amenities. In particular is One Sutton Place South, designed in an Italianate manner with archways and an interior courtyard. With the United Nations Building only five blocks south of Sutton Place, there is also an international presence; the Secretary General now lives in what used to be a Vanderbilt family estate. Sutton Place is ideal for those seeking some of New York City’s most refined and elegant apartments. Mostly residential, First Avenue is the go-to place for dining and shopping, while the subway is another two blocks west. In turn, those who prefer the quiet will enjoy living in Sutton Place. The riverfront view certainly doesn’t hurt.
