Turtle Bay

Midtown Manhattan’s neighborhood of Turtle Bay is a scenic haven of New York City, with a diverse history that ranges from its origins as a blue-collar shipping hub to its modern role as a hub of international business and diplomacy. Turtle Bay extends between 41st and 53rd Streets, and eastward from Lexington Avenue to the East River, across from Roosevelt Island. Home to a vibrant community, East River views and modern plush condominiums and businesses, Turtle Bay is a NYC neighborhood that preserves its local character while embracing its international distinctions. Turtle Bay was a calm shelter from the often harsh weather of the East River, and became a thriving site for shipbuilding and commerce in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

When Robert Fulton built his famous steamboat in 1808 along the East River, coal plants, mills and breweries populated Turtle Bay, providing jobs for arriving immigrants from Europe. Later the scene of the Civil War’s New York City Draft Riots, the neighborhood of Turtle Bay fell on hard times until 1918, when construction of the Turtle Bay Gardens drew waves of celebrities and artists to the area, including Edgar Allen Poe, Katharine Hepburn and Stephen Sondheim. Following the construction of the United Nations Headquarters in 1948, the townhouses and brownstones of Turtle Bay Gardens co-exist with the high-rises and condominiums of today. A neighborhood of unprecedented growth and opportunity, Turtle Bay is an excellent neighborhood for anyone looking to experience the breadth of what NYC has to offer.
