Washington Heights

Nestled amongst the hills of Upper Manhattan is Washington Heights, a neighborhood steeped in colonial history and a radical departure from much of New York City. Bordering Harlem to the south at 155th Street, the area encompassed by the term “Washington Heights” stretches northwards to Dyckman Street, where it meets Inwood. The island begins to drastically narrow in the area, and the Hudson and Harlem Rivers are around a mile apart at some points. Within these borders, however, lies a neighborhood rich with historic buildings, museums, and traditional New York architecture. One of New York City’s oldest neighborhoods, Washington Heights’ strategic location between two rivers and its high elevation made it an integral clashing point during the American Revolution.

Still relatively quiet for the next century, the neighborhood became the home of a number of wealthy residents, staying this way until the early 1900s when explosive immigration pushed the population northwards, aided by the recently-completed subway which ran down St Nicholas Avenue, Washington Heights’ main thoroughfare. Increasingly diverse throughout the 20th century, the area is now renowned for its Dominican population, although the population is still changing. Even with two subway lines and quite a few major streets crisscrossing the neighborhood, Washington Heights is still relatively isolated and quiet by Manhattan standards. In addition, the area’s hilly terrain makes it feel separate from the rest of the city, and for those who seek somewhere different and a more natural feel, Washington Heights is an excellent choice. The neighborhood is convenient to travel to and from and contains its own unique collection of restaurants, shops, and homes. For these reasons and many more, it only makes sense that Washington Heights continues to grow.
