Moving Checklist
When moving to an apartment in New York City, making a moving checklist is essential. There are far too many things to keep track of by memory alone, even if you've moved before and are familiar with the process. If you do all of these things, you should have no problems moving in on time and being able to enjoy your new apartment in New York City as soon as possible.
More than 1 Month Before Moving
- Evaluate the size of your new residence and determine if you will have room for all of your possessions in your new home
- Start cleaning out your home of items you will not be taking with you and donate what you can
- Make an inventory list of things you will take that you can compare with the mover’s list
- Find a reputable moving company
- Confirm your move-in date with the appropriate party
- Notify regularly scheduled services (gardener, pool service) about the day your leaving so their services can be canceled
- Notify post office, credit card companies, insurance companies, and banks about your change of address
- Begin to plan when you will be packing and who will be packing what rooms
- Get copies of important records that you can keep on file (medical records, children’s school records, legal records, veterinary records)
- Ask for referrals for professionals in your new neighborhood
Two Weeks Before Moving
- Let utilities (gas, electric, water) know when to discontinue your service. Leave a day or two in case of a problem
- Contact new utility companies where you are moving to arrange for services to start on the day you move in
- Take pictures of how electronics are set up so that you know how to hook them up again in your new home
- Label boxes with the room names and number them (ex: BTH 1 of 5 for “Bathroom 1 of 5”)
Week of the Move
- Confirm your moving schedule with important parties
- Pack a suitcase that gives you enough clothing and essentials for a few days while you are unpacking everything
- Plan how you will unpack and make sure you have a box for necessities for each room
- Purchase moving insurance for valuables
Moving Day
- Make sure your inventory lists matches that of the movers
- Check your house one last time for any items that you may have missed
- Leave your contact information at your old home in case anything arrives for you when the new owners are there
- Arrive at your new home before the movers and check all appliances and heating units. If they are not working, call the appropriate people
- Check the condition of your belongings and mark down anything that is missing or damaged
After Moving
- Notify IRS and other organizations of address change
- Check with post office to see if they were holding any mail
- Get new licenses as necessary (driver, pets, etc.)
- Ask for recommendations for any professionals that you do not already have in your new town
- Explore your new neighborhood and learn more about it
- Enjoy your new home!
