Manhattan Brownstone Buildings
Townhouses are brownstones and brownstones are townhouses, but Manhattan brownstones are still something different — something much more elegant, and much more highly sought-after, than just about any other residential listing in Manhattan. Many Manhattan brownstones date back to the earliest years of the 20th century, and their spacious proportions, private backyards and elegant interior details are both homey and distinguished. Originally developed next to horse traffic, classic brownstones have a staircase leading from the sidewalk to the second floor entrance of the apartment; this was meant to avoid bringing in mud off the street.
Brownstones can be found all over Manhattan’s Upper West Side and Upper East Side, and brownstone blocks can be found everywhere from Chelsea to the Lower East Side. Wherever they are, though, Manhattan brownstones are in demand.
