Host your own Oscars viewing party
On Sunday night, New Yorkers, much like the rest of the world, will be glued to their television sets watching the 85th installment of the Academy Awards. Hosting an Oscars viewing party will therefore be a great way to get all your friends together and have a jolly good time watching the ceremony—from gawking at what the stars will be wearing, to debating whether Robert De Niro could score his third Oscar win, watching the Academy Awards with your friends promises to a fun, exciting affair.
Here are three suggestions to make your Oscar’s viewing party as entertaining as the actual awards presentation:
If you have ever been in the city for Halloween, you know that New Yorkers love to put on a costume. Invoke that spirit into your Oscar’s viewing party—ask your guests to dress up like the stars, or better yet, dress up like their favorite movie characters! Use this year’s Best Picture nominees for inspiration: options include Lincoln’s eponymous, brooding hero, or the snarling Bengal tiger from Life of Pi.
Since the focus of this party is set to be your television screen, expect your guests to be crowded around that one entity in your living room. As a result, keep the food offerings small and easy to share—think appetizers, finger foods and, of course, popcorn. For drinks, you could keep it classy and arrange for cocktails, but then again, an old-fashioned drinking game could be the best way to sit through the usually awkward “thank you” speeches.
Every Oscar nominee goes home with a $45,000 gift bag, and while we wouldn’t advise any party host to send their guests home with that kind of swag, having a few party games can add some buzz to your Oscar viewing party. You know that your friends are going to debating each other on who’s going to win the coveted awards—so turn that into a competition!
