Midday in Midtown Manhattan: Broadway In Bryant Park
Summer is here, and boy-oh-boy has it been hot and muggy! That said, there is no better time to be out and about, enjoying the umpteen amount of free and fun activities around New York, than SUMMER. Don’t fret, just spot a volunteer at the event handing out free hand fans to help you cope in the sweltering heat.
New York in the summer is like a rainbow with a million different shades, each more vibrant than the other. From New Yorkers clad in neon hues, homes with flower window boxes placed in sunny spots, and storefronts with cheery bright colors, with summer ideas for you, your home, and your pooch too.
Among the long list of things to do, the free Broadway show event, (yes! you read that right) - Broadway in Bryant Park, that happens on July 11th through August 15th, every Thursday, perfectly placed during your mundane weekday lunch hour (12.30 to 1.30 pm)- is an event that will get you all perky and pumped up for the rest of the day.
With anywhere between four and five of the most popular Broadway shows being performed for 20 minutes each, this event gives tourists and New Yorker’s a peek into what they can expect. Being at the event has its perks too, don’t be surprised if you are handed out discount coupons, and see actors in character doing the rounds of the park.
Having been there myself last year, I can say without the doubt, the excitement in the air is palpable. Be sure to be an early bird, to get that coveted “shade spot” if you want to save yourself from being sunbaked, but if sunbathing is your thing, then the lawns at Bryant Park is ideal. With chairs all around the garden, its easy to pick one and put it at a vantage point of your choice.
The lineup for the years Broadway shows read like this - Stomp, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Pippin, Natasha, The Phantom of the Opera, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, Kinky Boots, Annie The Musical, and Motown the Musical; are some of the most popular ones among several others. Coupled with fun anchors, brought to you on behalf of the sponsors at 106.7 Lite FM, it sure keeps the show going.
Be sure to check out the full schedule here, and be there to enjoy your lunchtime entertainment through the summer!
