    Stephane Boivin, head of the development firm Nordica Soho, is in hot water after a series of foul plays in his attempts to develop on two SoHo properties purchased in 2011 and 2012. A private equity fund, Silo Capital, has filed a $5.6m foreclosure lawsuit against the Canadian developer after he used the property at 186 Spring Street (just down the road from Urban Glass House) as collateral to secure a loan, and then proceeded to demolish the building – improperly, according to the firm.

    Once rattled by crime and abandoned buildings occupied by the homeless, Alphabet City was one of Manhattan’s most disheveled locations during the 80s. Many residents didn’t see an upturn for the Lower Manhattan area, which many locals made it a point to steer clear of. However when Mayor Giuliani took office during the 90s, New Yorkers were pleasantly surprised to see a vast improvement. Suddenly streets were clean and safe enough for shop owners to establish stores for patrons to visit, and eventually developers caught on, realizing Alphabet City’s mass potential. It would have been unexpected, though, that Alphabet City would become one of Manhattan’s most expensive communities to live in, incorporating both lush convenience and an urbanely rugged environment reminiscent of the past.

  • New Study Shows that Non-smoking Buildings Cost Less to Maintain By Stephanie Spencer | June 01, 2012

    A recent study published by the American Journal of Public Health found that smoke-free rental apartments prove beneficial to landlords by being cheaper to maintain, according to BrickUnderground. This study and continuing debates on whether or not smoking should be allowed in apartment buildings may slowly begin putting a damper on residents who like to smoke cigarettes while at home. The study, which briefly focused on the statistics of non-smoking rental expenses in California, showed that 1 in 3 rental buildings throughout the state did not allow smoking in apartments, therefore on average $5,000 was saved per year.
